We own the radio and the wireless to Guglielmo Marconi. He was born at Bologna in 1874. He became a student in the bologna university. He took up electricity as his chief subject. The telegraph and the telephone were already in use. By these, message could be sent by electricity along copper wires. Marconi’s idea was to find a way of sending message by electricity without wires. He made experiments in his garden. He found he could thus send a message two miles. He offered his discovery to the Italian Government. It was refused. The English Government took it up. They let Marconi set up a wireless station in Cornwall. Steamers were fitted up with Marconi’s wireless instruments. This was the beginning. It led to Wireless telephony or “broadcasting” Now we can “listen in” to music and men speaking thousands of miles away. Marconi was a great inventor.
