In old times men
thought the Earth was flat. Now we know it is a Round ball. It is a very big ball. It is 25,000 miles
round. It floats in space. But it does not stand still. All the time it is
rushing through space very fast. It moves in a circle round the sun. It takes a
year to go right round the sun. At the same time it is turning round on itself.
It spins round like a top. It takes twenty-four hours to spin right round. It
is this spinning of the earth that makes day and night. When our part of earth sees
the sun, it is day with us. When it is turned away from the sun, it is night.
To us the sun seems to be going round the earth. But this is because we are spinning
round with the earth. It is not the sun that moves.
